At one point I had an article that appeared in The Message that talked of the SBC’s position on abortion. It was from the early 70’s & it stated that abortion was a private decision between a women & her doctor. Very different from today’s position. Sadly, I can no longer find my copy nor the link I had to an e-copy. Did y’all find anything like this in your research?
No and yes. But the building is still for sale. I think there is hope that the archives would remain and perhaps just rent space, but no one knows what will happen. I'm very concerned for the archivists and the documents.
Hi…loved the podcast…I also have researched at the SBC archives for an American Church History Doctoral Seminar when I was a student at MABTS in 2007 or 2008…I also received the study grant and know Taffey…archives rock!!!!
I preordered Becoming the Pastor's Wife months ago, and yesterday it finally arrived! That book is my plan and only plan for this afternoon. Thank you for bringing it to us.
I'm not surprised by Tipper Gore, frankly. At the time she was asked to speak, she was best known as co-founder of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), the source of all of the "Explicit" warning labels on music in the US. (I've always been oddly pleased, as a Minnesotan, that her daughter's listening to a Prince tune spurred her efforts.)
Thanks for this. I’ve not had a chance to read Becoming The Pastors wife yet. But I did read your book The making of biblical womanhood. It was so eye opening and now listening to All the Buried Women. I grew up in 60s and 70s. I just wrote a piece about my mom breaking the barriers of women working in a “man’s world” during that time. I grew up SBC. I’m working on a piece of my dive into learning Biblical Womanhood as a young married woman in the early 80s and then my unlearning of it. I was never taught this stuff growing up. But it was slightly evident in the leadership rolls of church. when I started learning Biblical womanhood I dove in. Now I understand why I wasn’t taught it. It didn’t really exist much until the mid to late 70s. The parts about Paige Patterson was just shocking. I heard Dorothy Patterson speak once at a woman’s retreat. It was on “biblical hospitality”. Why do we think adding biblical in front of anything suddenly makes it scriptural? My mom was such a role model for me in her accomplishments but there were no women achieving the same things in the church. Your research is so fascinating, eye opening and shocking!! I love the podcast!
My daughter is a junior at Baylor, so I was entertained by your mention of Baylor as a source for your research. I’d been wondering if by “Baptist” Baylor meant SBC…and now I hope they’ve escaped the consolidation of the rest of the denomination! They refused to admit for decades that Judge Baylor was a slave owner, but within the past few years they commissioned statues of the first Black man and woman to attend the college. I’ve seen them, and they’re true likenesses with plaques that give context to the names and dates on the pedestals. My daughter enrolled after the unveiling celebration, but it gives me a positive outlook for the future of the SBC!
I was telling my friend about the two of you being able to dig through the archives . When I said I would absolutely LOVE to do that ! (She thinks I’m crazy)
I've worked with Taffey in the past -- our institution used to house the Southern Baptist Publishing Index, and have since had to transfer it to the archives -- and she's a fantastic person! As a librarian, I'm so thrilled to see people using the materials that we squirrel away, half-convinced that no one will ever look at them again. To see them used in such a beautiful and challenging way is just the cherry on top!

No but I would be extremely curious to find this!
Yes, I have seen discussion of this. the conversation on abortion changes even inside the SBC.
thank you for this.
appreciate your words and these archive photos.
I’m so looking forward to All The Buried Women.
Did the SBC end up selling that building? Are the archives still available?
No and yes. But the building is still for sale. I think there is hope that the archives would remain and perhaps just rent space, but no one knows what will happen. I'm very concerned for the archivists and the documents.

Haha! I'm sure that is why she was asked, at least in part. But I can't imagine a similar circumstance happening today.
