Help me break the "sophomore book syndrome"
Becoming the Pastor's Wife is out in the world and here are easy ways you can help (including a possible giveaway from me)
I just learned that the second book of a bestselling author is often called the “sophomore.” Sophomore books, I have been told, are notoriously more difficult to launch as they are often overshadowed by the debut book. I hadn’t really thought about the “sophomore” book syndrome, but it makes sense. Honestly, as important as The Making of Biblical Womanhood is, I actually think the research in Becoming the Pastor’s Wife is potentially more groundbreaking—if only I can get as many people to read it, too.
So if you want to help, this is the week to do it!
First, if you missed it, Becoming the Pastor's Wife Launch Party at Fabled Bookshop & Cafe was amazing last night! You can watch the livestream just by clicking on the purple title above.
Second, if you are as excited about the book as I am, this is the week to help get the word out! Pre-order and first week sales are really important to make sure a book stays visible and available. If you are interested in purchasing it at all, or giving it to a friend, this is the week to do it. You can still find it for 30% discount at Baker Book House, but ordering it anywhere is great. I love all the people purchasing audiobooks (I love audiobooks too!), but I often find I want a hardcopy or ebook to go alongside the audiobook (which are the sales that count in helping a book stay in stores and/or hit bestseller lists :). So, if you think you might want a hardcopy or digital copy, this again is the week to make that purchase.
Another way to help is by posting reviews on amazon, goodreads, bookshop, and anywhere folk buy books. Just giving a rating and providing a sentence or two goes a long way.
Finally, episode two of All the Buried Women comes out tomorrow! Supporting the podcast also helps support the book—so listen, rate, and subscribe if you can! Not to mention I think you will love the podcast if you give it try.
I don’t think I will make a bestseller list this time (which is okay), but if I do, I will give away to a Marginalia subscriber my Women Preaching and Pastoring tote bag, as well as a signed copy of both Becoming the Pastor’s Wife and The Making of Biblical Womanhood. I bet I can find another t-shirt too :)
Regardless, I am so grateful for you and so happy the Becoming the Pastor’s Wife is finally in the world!
I think the book's success may surprise you. Hashim W commented on FB (in the book launch group) that you seem to have gotten past a "cloud of critics in your head". Your social media presence this past year has been more determined and confident I think. When one puts your thesis together with Kristin's abuse documentary and the many freely available clips of theobro sermon pathology, it's not hard to see that evangelicals have got a real and systemic problem with the way we view and value women. And it's a lot bigger than debating a few bible verses. I'm certainly gonna talk up your work to anyone who will listen - and I think a whole lot of others will too.
I've been meaning to order a copy. Just did that! Thanks for the reminder and good luck on the first week!
