Definitely looking forward to reading Disciples of White Jesus. As a Black Christian, growing up in the 90s and entering young adulthood in the early 2000s, the patriarchal and complementarianism worldview of Piper, Eldredge, et. al. greatly influenced my spiritual formation. And for at least the last 10 years, I have been deconstructing and reconstructing. I think it is critical to note that, while white Christian boys and men are at the epicenter, within American Christianity, boys and men of all racial and ethnic identities can be—and indeed are—very often pulled in by the centripetal force of whiteness that pervades the dominant culture.

The zoom was awesome--thank you so much! I'm trying to find the sermon Angela talked about having given called "Women Be Silent" and am having no luck. Are you aware of where I can access it? Also just about to get my copy of Becoming the Pastor's Wife. So excited to see what you have to say, particularly about how you engage 1 Cor. 14:34. Thanks so very much!

Excellent conversation this afternoon with Beth and Angela on their books and the larger question of the role of women in the church and of men’s response to that. Beth, I’m guessing your podcast chat this week was with Molly Marshall, who was an inspiration to me when I was writing about the role of women in the history of the church body in which I grew up as a PK, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Molly’s experience in the SBC was a parallel of what was happening in the LCMS as both denominations were taken over by a fundamentalist conservatism in the 80s and 90s. It was scary stuff then but it’s only gotten worse in the years since as those two church bodies have dug in their heels on the ordination of women and more. Thanks for your work from this daughter of a pastor’s wife who got it right.

Mea culpa. I have just now subscribed to the podcast and learned by listening to episode 2 of a different woman ordained by the SBC, Kathy Hoppe. Her story as an invisible ordained woman is an important one, as is Dr. Marshall’s, told as it was in the video, Battle for the Minds.

Oh my. I read those books. They certainly confused my mind. I didn’t become a believer until my 50s. I lost my individuality. But I’ve got it back. Our marriage still in tact as my husband didn’t read those books. I feel freer than ever to be who God wants me to be.

Another book for my list.
