I identify far too much with your opening line about typos 😆. Also, I just picked up a book titled The Once and Future Sex: Going Medieval on Women’s Roles in Society by Eleanor Jenega. Looks fun and witty.
Confession: I've never found the medieval era all that interesting, but the more I hear from you about it, the more I'm curious about what I've been missing out! My lack of knowledge on it is probably due to typical fundy-evangelical overemphasis on American History in the Christian schools I attended (and the curriculum my parents picked when I was homeschooled). And of course, they tended only to aspects convenient to their specific agendas and worldviews. ahem. :)
I am afraid, my European public school also did not spur my interest in medieval women's accomplishments. I had great history and music history teachers but I guess this topic had not been covered much in their studies either nor was it represented in our history books.
I remember how years ago, as an evangelical young woman, I very much looked down on all things gender study. I truely believed it was useless. Now I see how essential it is to remove the blindfold that patriarchy has put on us.
Bede? Interesting! I remember his feast day from my altar boy days - it was near the very end of the school year, and was a day with multiple saints to choose from. Those are some interesting titles. I'm still burning through Kristin's bookshelf.org list at about 2 per week. What a leader we all have in her. Thank God for Kristin's brains and bravery - although really she's just doing what any regular person is capable of doing (telling the truth and standing up for the less fortunate), should they choose to do so. With your strong distaste for anti-vax stuff I find myself nearly in lock-step with you most days as well. Hope it's a productive writing break for you! :)
one day I’ll set up a bookshop. Kristin is more organized than me! My dad testified for vaccine efficacy in a court trial last week. He persuaded the judge.
Bede naming forty women in 735 while modern church histories still forget them is proof that some “progress” is just circling the drain in prettier tiles. And Julian? She’s still out here calling God “Mother” while the boys in collars pretend they didn’t hear it. Your next book sounds like it’s about to kick open a few medieval doors the patriarchy bricked shut.

So, thanks for helping me fill in some gaps!

I am so thankful for Beth Allison Barr's work!
I relate to this a lot!
Thanks for the shout-out to Bede! I hope he hears you.
Your current research project sounds fascinating.
Ok, I grabbed the Forest book! Thank you! If people are interested, I wrote an intro to Julian with discussion questions and include a few excerpts: https://ttf.org/product/revelations-of-divine-love/

Another gem coming! I've become so intrigued by medieval women from learning from you. 🤗
